Some travellers may not like to take a malaria chemoprophylaxis due to several factors:
- The area they travel to is not highly endemic and / or they always stay in large towns with airconditioned hotels.
- The trip is only very short and the foreseeable risk very low
- Earlier negative experience with chemoprophylaxis (side effects)
Your doctor or your specialist in a local travel health center will decide on whether an ESBT would be suitable for your specific travel itinary. However, it has been proven by follow-up studies that most persons who had been given an ESBT didn’t have to make use of it.
As with chemoprophylaxis, the drug prescribed for ESBT depends on several factors like e.g. the geographical destination.
